A lot of people have teased me about being a CRAZY coupon lady. Honestly, I am and I think of it as a compliment. However, a lot of people watch the show on tv and think that I'm a crazed hoarder who feels a compulsion to have 834 bottles of ketchup or 9,000 rolls of toilet paper in my basement. I really don't have room for that...and my family wouldn't let me. But if you really want the truth I do have 3 sets of shelving in my basement that I have "stored" more than one of a certain item on.
It took me quite awhile to understand why those CRAZY coupon ladies talked about stocking up....and I thought I would never do it. I've changed my mind about that and this is why - I have learned that I rarely can get a lot of things for free (or deeply discounted)...we don't have double coupons in Des Moines. And as of the news report this morning and an article in the paper last week..prices of food at the grocery store is going up!
I began my secret hoarding with just a small stash of ketchup. Let me tell you..ketchup doesn't last long around my house, it gets used. I bought a ton of ketchup (Ok 10 bottles of ketchup seemed like a ton at the time!!) on sale at $0.75 cents a bottle and stored it in my basement. Soon after my kids said "Mom, we're out of ketchup!!" I was suddenly able to reply..."Go down stairs and get some more." I didn't have to run to the store (that in it's self was a HUGE cost savings of money and my time.) I also didn't have to pay $2.00 a bottle for it when it wasn't on sale.
Since that moment, I realized that what some people consider "hoarding" was actually saving me lots of money AND lots of time! I no longer am EVER out of sugar because I buy several bags at a time when it's on sale!! I have started stocking up on good buys so I don't have to pay regular price for items I use often! It always brings a smile to my face when we're out of shampoo, toothpaste etc..and all I have to do is go down to my little stockpile and grab what I need!
So couponing has become a passion, a game and a way of life for my family. It's not so much what I can get for free...but it HAS become important to me to not pay full price for the items I purchase. So I will state PROUDLY that am I Crazy Couponing Lady and a Hoarder...YEP!! And if you ever need any ketchup or sugar....give me a call! I've got plenty of it downstairs. The best thing is is I didn't pay full price for any of it!
I do shop at Aldi's and this week they are having some great deals!
FYI: Aldi's has what I consider a SUPER deal on chicken stock! For the large box chicken/beef stock it's ALWAYS under $2.00!!!
